Introduction

In this section we describe the functions and procedures relating to the transfer of messages between signaling points (i.e., signaling network nodes). These nodes are connected by signaling links involving layers 1 and 2 described in Sections 14.5 and 14.6. Another important function of layer 3 is to inform the appropriate entities of a fault and, as a consequence, carry out rerouting through the network. The signaling network functions are broken down into two basic categories:

• Signaling message handling

• Signaling network management (see Section 14.4.1 for description)
