This section provides a brief description of the architecture of sensor nodes and illustrates the general structure of sensor networks. It also discusses the communication organization architecture of sensor networks as well as the corresponding data dissemination architectures. In order to complete their task, sensor nodes need to perform the functions of sensing, processing, and communicating; Figure 15.1 demonstrates the typical architecture of a sensor node. Several experimental sensor nodes and networks have been developed, including Smart Dust mote developed by UC Berkley ; WINS (wireless integrated network sensors) NG (next-generation) node by UCLA , and mAMPS node (microadaptive, multidomain power-aware sensors) developed by MIT .
