3.1 Basic Properties of Electromagnetic Waves

3.1.1 Electromagnetic Parameters characterising Wave Propagation

The propagation of an electromagnetic wave is described through different parameters: the electric and magnetic fields E and H, the electric flux density D and the magnetic induction B (Jouguet 1978). Only vectors E and B generate effects allowing the determination of the electromagnetic field. The vectors D and B are linked to vectors E and H through the following linear relations:
