Fiber Applications

Because of fiber's ability to support high-speed digital transmission, it will be used more and more in telecommunications networks. In telephony networks, fiber provides the foundation for all other communications services. It will increasingly be deployed to provide terabits per second transmission channels between major telephone company facilities. These links will carry voice, video, and Internet traffic. LANs will use gigabit fiber for campus backbone network connections and slower speed fiber links to connect wiring closet LAN components to central facility switches. Fiber connections will run from these LANs into ISPs to connect the LANs to the Internet. New fiber channel technology will be used to connect LAN servers to remote facilities housing huge networks of disk drives providing servers with access to terabytes of disk storage and more.

Everything we just discussed is in OSI Layer 1.
