The radio realization for EDGE has not been completed at the time of writing. It is however quite clear that one will probably want to encapsulate more than one frame per packet to save overhead in lower layers. Even though this is beneficial for the utilization of the radio bearer, there are also a few drawbacks. Several frames per packet will increase the end-to-end delay because the transmitter will have to buffer frames before it can complete the packet and send it. Another drawback is that one lost packet means that several consecutive speech frames will be lost and consecutive frame losses are typically more audible than single losses. A reasonable compromise is to encapsulate two frames per packet.
