FIGURE 12.26 One-dimensional and two-dimensional DCTs of values defined over two spatial frequency variables. The DCT of this 8 x 8 block is also shown in Figure 12.26b. Because the original block consisted of the smooth section of the image the DCT has nonzero values concentrated at the low frequencies that correspond to the upper-left corner of the transformed block. It can also be seen that all other pixel values are zero. It is clear that the transformed block can be more readily compressed.
